Steve Horne’s ‘Staring At The Sun’ Is A Musical Journey of Global Sounds and Deep Thoughts

A singer, songwriter, and recordist from the UK’s southwest, Steve Horne has recently released his latest album, the soulful and stirring, ‘Staring at the Sun’. An ambitious album recorded between the Summers of 2021 and 2024, it features a diverse roster of musicians and singers from across the globe, building a textured and immersive sound that unfolds over ten original tracks. The result is a rich tapestry of sound that weaves together intricate layers of instrumentation, heartfelt vocals, and thoughtful lyrics that have been carefully built from a series of musical 'sketches'.

The album's opening track, ‘Higher Power’, is a vibrant fusion of upbeat country and soulful brass that evolves and unfolds over seven minutes. It's an impressive introduction early into the piece, showcasing Horne's ability to create a captivating wall of sound. Both expansive and intimate, he excels in blending genres, adding elements and creating rich musical worlds.

As the album continues, ‘Motion of the Stars’ is another impressive illustration of Horne's layering technique, blending accordion, stylophone, and other instruments into a flowing, cresting harmony. Horne's songwriting speaks volumes, as he takes inspiration from the world around him to make his mark. ‘Miracle’ and ‘Frozen’ are inspired by scientific and philosophical concepts, while others like ‘The Mirror Pool’ and ‘Shine On' explore more personal themes. His lyrics are often introspective and poetic, inviting the listener to delve deeper into their meaning.

Throughout, Horne's vocals carry the heart and soul of the album. His voice is infused with a raw sincerity that perfectly complements the music's emotional depth. Liliia Kysil's backing vocals are also a highlight, adding a layer of ethereal beauty to several tracks.

‘Staring at the Sun’ is an album that rewards repeated listening. Its intricate arrangements, heartfelt vocals, and thoughtful lyrics reveal new layers of meaning with each play. Whether you're drawn to the album's grand soundscapes or its intimate moments, there's something here for everyone.
